Exercise ProgramsExercise is the best way for children with cystic fibrosis – who spend much of their time reacting to their disease with medication and therapy – to decrease shortness of breath, lessen muscle deterioration, and possibly add years to their lives. “Exercise is essential for the health and well-beingof children with cystic fibrosis”Swimming is especially recommended for children with cystic fibrosis because it has been shown to be a very effective natural means of loosening mucus. Other forms of aerobic exercise also increase airflow and decrease respiratory distress. The Child Life Society buys exercise equipment (e.g., treadmill, foot-propelled scooters) for home use, makes arrangements and underwrites the cost of various exercise programs for Jewish children with cystic fibrosis.
