For most people, breathing is involuntary.
For children with cystic fibrosis —it’s torture.

Cystic fibrosis is an incurable genetic disease that torments its victims without relief.

People with cystic fibrosis lack the protein needed to produce normal mucus, and instead produce a sticky, glue-like mucus that clogs their airways and lungs, making breathing painful and exhausting.

Being a child with cystic fibrosis
means having ...

  • Constant fatigue that limits running, jumping, and playing.
  • Frequent life-threatening lung infections.
  • Constant medicine, vitamins, therapies, and doctor visits.
  • Parents and siblings who are physically and emotionally drained.
  • No cure. No relief. No hope.

Fortunately, there is a source of hope for these children — the Child Life Society.

The Child Life Society’s sole purpose is to provide whatever is needed, wherever it is needed to help children with cystic fibrosis. This includes:

  • Financial assistance
  • Medical and exercise equipment
  • Therapeutic getaways
  • Medicine and vitamins
  • Respiratory therapy
  • Toys and games for hospitalized children
  • Referrals for physicians and treatment options
  • Educational resources
  • Household help and supplemental childcare
The Child Life Society shows the children that someone cares ... that they don’t have to suffer alone.

The Child Life Society Cystic Fibrosis Retreat in Key West Florida

KeywestIn 2007, a study in the New England Journal of Medicine reported that cystic fibrosis patients experienced long lasting relief during and after prolonged exposure to certain types of oceanic climates. The closest area with this type of climate is in Key West, Florida.

The Child Life Society immediately began sending the children and their families on weeklong trips to Key West. The results were immediate and astonishing.

Staying true to its mission, the Child Life Society recognized that if this climate can bring such relief to children with cystic fibrosis, then a permanent retreat must be created.

We are now in the process of creating a permanent retreat in Key West for children with cystic fibrosis and their families in Key West.

Plans for the retreat include:

  • Separate homes to accommodate as many families as possible, all year-round.
  • Daily Glatt kosher meals and a nearby shul for weekday and Shabbat prayer.
  • Immediate proximity to the ocean for maximum therapeutic effect.

With planning is well underway, now is the best time to join us in fulfilling our goal.
