Medical Information

A number of treatments exist for the symptoms and complications of cystic fibrosis. But the choice can be dizzying for parents who are desperate to bring relief and normalcy to the lives of their children.

The Child Life Society advises parents, or directs them to qualified pulmonary specialists, to help parents make effective, well-informed decisions when choosing one treatment over another. Here are a few available choices:

Parents need a reliable resource to make

well-informed treatment decisions.”

  • Antibiotics, especially newer antibiotics being developed, help fight bacteria that cause lung infections in people with cystic fibrosis.
  • Mucus-thinning drugs make mucus thinner and easier to cough up.
  • Bronchodilators help open bronchial tubes by clearing thick secretions.
  • Bronchial airway drainage is a technique to physically remove thick mucus from the lungs. This is often done by manually clapping on the front and back of the chest. A new device, an inflatable vest that vibrates at high frequency, can help people with cystic fibrosis cough up secretions.
  • Lung transplantation

Caring for a child with cystic fibrosis can be confusing and frightening.
