Lifeshine Respite

KeywestEver since a study was published in the prestigious New England Journal of Medicine touting the benefits of a salty oceanic climate for cystic fibrosis patients, Child Life Society has worked to offer families the best opportunity to enjoy these benefits.

After close consultation with various experts and physicians, Child Life Society settled on Key West, Florida – located on the southern tip of the state, near the Caribbean Islands – as the ideal location for its new Lifeshine Respite Program. Key West offers cystic fibrosis patients and their families a breathtaking environment with the perfect climate: pollution free, oceanic and high salt.

KeywestSince 2007, patients and their families have received fully sponsored respite trips, including kosher food and access to all other religious necessities. The respite trips are medically and emotionally therapeutic, helping them better cope with the disease’s challenges in the weeks and months ahead. Patients get an immediate boost in energy and appetite, as well as significant reduction to their mucus congestion, which makes it easier to breath and reduces chances of infection.

KeywestIn 2013, the Lifeshine Respite Program celebrated a great milestone with the acquisition of its own beautiful respite home perfectly suited to cystic fibrosis patients and their families. The state-of-the-art “Weissman House” was meticulously designed with these occupants in mind, and is available for use at any time. Due to medical concerns, only one family can occupy the home at a time. Child Life Society is continually working to acquire additional homes to meet growing demand.

For most people, a breath is effortless and invigorating.
For children with cystic fibrosis, it’s torture.
