Therapeutic Respite (Keywest)A 2007 study published in the New England Journal of Medicine, determined that individuals suffering with cystic fibrosis experience genuine, long-lasting relief from their symptoms through exposure to air with a high concentration of sea salt. Soon after the report was released, Child Life Society began sending children with cystic fibrosis, with their families, on medically supervised trips to Key West, Florida. The benefits are immediate and astonishing Key West is located at the southern-most tip of Florida, and the only place in the continental United States with a high salt concentration climate. Once exposed to the salty ocean air in Key West, the children quickly feel an upswing in their energy and appetite.
